Savoury superfood sprinkle

That's one of the recipes that came to my mind while I was sleeping. I often dream about food but that was the first time I woke up and I remembered the exact recipe from my dream (not only ingredients but the quantities too!). I wrote the recipe down after opening my eyes and the same morning went to my kitchen to make it. I put all the ingredients in the blender and guess what? It turned out absolutely delicious!

Most vegans I know sprinkle nutritional yeast on everything they eat. Nutritional yeast is a great source of Vitamin B12 essential nutrient that doesn't exist in plant-based foods. Nutritional yeast is also rich in all the other B vitamins. But there are other nutrients the vegan diet is naturally low in. What about putting all of them in one delicious seasoning you can sprinkle on everything you eat?

Black sesame is an excellent source of calcium and iron, pumpkin seeds provide zinc and iron, flax seeds are a great source of omega 3 fatty acids, arame seaweed is rich in iodine and unlike the other seaweeds has a neutral pleasant taste. These ingredients mixed with nutritional yeast and Himalayan salt make umami-rich seasoning that can replace regular salt and many other spices.

Prep time: 5 minutes

1 x small jar

Ingredients

2 tbsp black sesame seeds
2 tbsp golden flax seeds
1 tbsp pumpkin seeds
1 tbsp dried arame seaweed
1 tsp Himalayan salt
4 tbsp nutritional yeast

Method

You will need 1 small glass jar with a lid and a small blender jug or coffee grinder.

  1. Place all the ingredients in a blender jug or coffee grinder and blitz until powdered.

  2. Put the ready seasoning in a glass jar and store it in a dark cold place, preferably in the fridge.

It will last for a few months but it is best to make a small batch every 2-3 weeks to retain the nutrients.

You can use any other seaweed instead of arame if you don’t mind the fishy flavour. Using arame makes the seasoning more versatile. You can sprinkle it on salads, soups, sandwiches, and hot meals.
